Susan G. Komen’s Planned Parenthood Crisis

Susan G. Komen, which is also known as Komen, is known for being the largest and best-funded cancer organization in the United States. They’ve donated nearly 2 million dollars towards breast cancer and have partnered with over 50 different countries in the world. They have over 100,000 volunteers of people all dedicated to stopping breast cancer around the world. Recently Komen has been receiving a lot of slack for sponsoring a program called “Planned Parenthood.” Planned Parenthood is a program known for providing sex awareness and wellness for female patients but they also happen to be the number one provider for abortions in America.

This abortion policy regarding Planned Parenthood is causing a lot of commotion around the Susan G. Komen organization because many people who support Susan G. Komen are not for abortion. The crisis strategy that I feel will be the most beneficial is the Good Intentions strategy that states that the organization meant to do well. The reason why I feel like this will be the best strategy is because it will show that the Susan G. Komen organization did not mean any harm by supporting another organization that sought to help women provide overall healthcare for women including abortions. They did not think about the consequences that would come with their actions.

In this link it shows the ladies of the talk show “The View” debating about whether or not Susan G. Komen should be criticized or not. They bring up valid points, pros, and cons regarding the situation at hand. “The View” co-host Sherry stated that the Susan G. Komen representative had good intentions originally with what they were aiming for. The original strategy that Komen decided to use was to stop funding the Planned Parenthood organization because of all the harsh criticism and the entire backlash that came with it. In my opinion doing that was just a way for them to run from the problem and not address their public that had showed concern for the issue. They issued out an apology as well but didn’t really apologize for why they did it, just their actions of doing so. Their explanation for the problem showed no concern and with that might cause them to lose fellow volunteers and donors. If they would have just expressed their concern for the issue at hand and showed why they partnered with Planned Parenthood in the first place they could have actually received more support than negativity.
